Energy Hygiene

Practices for energetic clearing

The human energy field is the subtle, living field that surrounds and moves through the body. It holds and connects our physical sensations, emotions, thoughts, and awareness, allowing them to communicate and influence one another.

  • The physical body is the densest expression of energy.

  • The emotional body is energy in motion.

  • The mental body is patterned, structured energy.

  • The spirit is the animating intelligence or source.

  • The energy field is the continuum that holds, connects, and translates between all of these layers. It is not separate from them, but the space in which they arise and interact.

This field is constantly responding—shifting with our internal state, our environment, and our attention. When it is open and moving, we tend to feel clear, balanced, and present. When it becomes congested or stagnant, we may experience tension, emotional heaviness, or mental overwhelm.

Tending the energy field is not about fixing anything, but about restoring movement and allowing the system to return to its natural state of balance.

Energy Hygiene

Energy hygiene is the intentional practice of tending your energy field. It involves releasing built-up tension or emotional residue, restoring movement, and creating space so your system can return to a natural state of balance.

There are many ways to clear our energy field. The following sections will provide you with clearing options for each layer of the body. I invite you to try some of them out and see if you notice any shifts.

Physical Practices

Movement: Physical movement helps open the body and create space for release. Try shaking, bouncing, exercise, yoga, or body tapping.

Breath: Breathwork connects you back to the body and can help consciously move energy. Explore practices such as Breathwave or pranayama (yogic breathwork).

Water: Water is a natural clearing element that supports energetic release. Try a long shower, bath, or sauna, and consider adding essential oils to deepen the effect.

Nature: Nature is a powerful ally in restoring balance. Walk outside, lie on the earth, go barefoot, or simply spend time with a tree.

Emotional Practices

Feeling: Allow emotions to move without suppressing or analyzing them. Creating space for feeling restores natural flow.

Sound: Sound can help move held energy through the body. Try sighing, humming, or using your voice in a way that feels natural.

Expression: Give what you’re experiencing a place to move. Journaling, speaking, or creative expression can support release and clarity.

Letter Writing (Release Ritual): Write a letter to yourself or another, expressing anything that feels held or unsaid. This is not meant to be shared—only to be released. When complete, burn or safely discard the letter as a way of letting the energy move and clear.

Mental Practices

Awareness: Notice repetitive thought patterns and storylines without attaching to them. Awareness alone can begin to soften their intensity.

Naming: Gently name your experience (e.g., “this is overwhelm,” “this is tension”). This creates space between you and the pattern, reminding you that what you are experiencing is not who you are.

Reducing Input: Limit overstimulation where possible. Creating mental space supports overall energetic balance.

Environmental Practices

Smudging: Burning plants such as sage, cedar, or palo santo can help clear and shift the energy of a space. Move the smoke with intention, allowing it to reach corners, doorways, and areas that feel heavy or stagnant.

Fresh Air: Opening windows and allowing fresh air to move through a space can support energetic renewal and flow.

Clean Space: Having a clean and uncluttered environment is integral to energy hygiene. Clearing physical space supports clarity, ease, and a more balanced field.

Energetic Practices

Grounding: Bring awareness into the body and imagine a line of energy connecting your root (first chakra) to the centre of the earth. Allow anything that feels unsteady or heavy to gently move downward, creating a sense of stability and support.

Intention: Set a simple intention to release what is not needed and return to clarity. The field responds to clear, gentle direction.

Awareness of the Field: Bring attention to the space around your body—front, back, and edges. This builds sensitivity and connection to your energy field.

Boundaries: Notice what feels like yours and what does not. Allow anything that isn’t yours to soften and release.

Spiritual Practices

Stillness: Spend time in quiet presence without trying to change anything. This allows the system to naturally reorganize.

Connection: Connect with something greater—nature, spirit, or your own inner awareness.

Calling Energy Back: Gently invite your energy to return to you at the end of the day or after interactions. Call it back to a large golden sun above your head. And then invite that gold energy to enter through the crown chakra and fill your entire being.

Gratitude: Bring attention to what feels supportive or nourishing. This can subtly shift and stabilize the field.
